Just Arrived…

October 29, 2013 Leave a comment Go to comments

When I saw a big sturdy envelope yesterday in the mail, my first thought was “is that the…” – and yes, it was – my Quatro certificate from The Wine Century Club!

Wine Century Clun Quattro Certificate

Wine Century Clun Quattro Certificate

Yes, I know that I tasted over 400 grapes, but somehow getting this piece of paper felt very good. And while I was thinking about the next level, the coveted 500, or Pentavini as it is called in The Wine Century Club, I didn’t feel encouraged – now I do. Thus you should expect to see more posts about obscure grapes and wines on this pages. But this is what makes it fun!

Join The Wine Century Club and start your journey now – you can thank me later! Cheers!

Woohoo! Congrats. Ours just arrived the other day….just the 100 though.

Do you resubmit all grapes for the 200 or just the additional grapes you tried? I guess my question is: Do they keep a list of the grapes you already had or do you resupply them?

Thank you! I add all of my new grapes/wines into the same spreadsheet, so when I submit it for the next level, I simply submit the updated file, so yes, I just keep adding. This way it is also easier to manage the whole process for me, and I always have a reference of what I already tried…

Yeah, that makes total sense! Thanks for your advice, Quatrissimo!! 🙂

Yes Congratulations! I hit the century and tried to make it to the double, but lost steam–way to go 400!

Congrats! I’m working on the 100 – I’m hosting a wine century club party in a couple of weeks to help me along!

Thank you! Isn’t it fun?! You make so many discoveries along the way, it is just a great way to expand your wine drinking horizons with all those unique grapes!

  5. October 29, 2013 at 11:07 am

Awesome! I’m highly impressed. The Wine Century is one of the coolest clubs I’ve ever heard of. I’m not a clubby person, but I sure am cheering you, and all the gang, on to success! (I’ve always been more of a cheerleader than a player–it’s only a supporting role, but I’m good at it. And studies have proven that good cheerleaders do boost morale and therefore improve a team’s chances of winning).

    We’re pushing to the top.
    Anatoli can’t be stopped.
    Go-Fight-Win.
    500! 500! Go, Anatoli!
    (the cheerleader does a cartwheel).

Tracy, you are not just a good cheerleader, you are The Best! Thank you very much – you just doubled my wine drinking energy : )

    Congrats!
How long did it take for them to send you the certificate and did they reply to your email? I’ve sent my application to the Wine Century Club over 2 months ago and haven’t gotten a reply yet..

      October 29, 2013 at 1:36 pm

Thank you, Julian! No, they don’t respond to the e-mails. I think it was 3-4 month for me – but as this is not an official business, this is more of Labor of Love, I can’t complain. This was my experience with them throughout the years, and I know that in the end of the day the certificate arrives. You can send them another email, just in case if the first one didn’t make it – but I would think that your certificate should arrive shortly.

    • October 29, 2013 at 2:09 pm

It was around 4 months for me as well, Julian…

      • November 1, 2013 at 9:12 pm

        Same here, 4 months… 🙂

        • November 1, 2013 at 10:00 pm

          YAY!

        • November 1, 2013 at 10:01 pm

Oh, congrats to you too, my friend, by the way! 🙂

        • November 1, 2013 at 10:02 pm

Thanks, likewise! Another club we’re in together now…

        • November 1, 2013 at 10:03 pm

Good point: so now we can say we’re clubbing together, which sounds kind of cool! 😉

        • November 1, 2013 at 10:04 pm

Makes us sound young and hip…look at us!

        • November 1, 2013 at 10:08 pm

You can say that again, dude! 😉

  8. October 29, 2013 at 1:51 pm

Congrats! I’ve thought about making the effort just to get to 100. But like Tracey above, I’m not much of a joiner. And to quote Groucho Marx, “I wouldn’t be a member of any club that would have me as a member.
500? That would be almost inconceivable and must represent a lot of effort just to find the next 100. Go get ‘me and let us hear about these next 100.

    • October 29, 2013 at 2:10 pm

Well, as you can see up there, with 470, he is almost there already!!! Incredible…

  9. October 29, 2013 at 6:34 pm

Congratulations and well done. I guess that I should attempt this myself, just so that I may see how many different grapes I have encountered.

Thank you, my dear friend! This is not too much of a big deal, honestly – it only means that I drink a lot of wine, and support wine industry well…

You also research lesser known grapes and keep track of them. That’s a lot of work. Nobody is giving me a certificate for 400 cheap grocery store Cabernets. 😉

  12. October 30, 2013 at 11:57 pm

Congratulations! And good luck on your way to 500. How many pentavinis are there? Not many, I bet.

      October 31, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Thank you! I’m not sure how many pentavinis are there – there should be a few.

Do you eliminate duplications due to synonyms? Using Robinson’s “Wine Grapes” as my bible for sorting those out, I’m nearing 400 myself. (It’s amazing how many names a single grape can have, and how much controversy there can be over whether a grape in one place is or isn’t the same grape somewhere else!)

    • talkavino
      June 25, 2014 at 10:36 am

It is a tough question. If the synonym is obvious, such as Grenache/Garnacha/Garnaxta, then yes, it would be one grape. But then, for instance, I would look at Sangiovese and Sangiovese Grosso, or Tempranillo and Ink of Toro (Toro), separate grapes. I have done for the established clones as well, such as Sauvignon Blanc/Soliloque Sauvignon Blanc. Don’t know if this helps, but this is my approach so far.
