When I saw a big sturdy envelope yesterday in the mail, my first thought was “is that the…” – and yes, it was – my Quatro certificate from The Wine Century Club!

Yes, I know that I tasted over 400 grapes, but somehow getting this piece of paper felt very good. And while I was thinking about the next level, the coveted 500, or Pentavini as it is called in The Wine Century Club, I didn’t feel encouraged – now I do. Thus you should expect to see more posts about obscure grapes and wines on this pages. But this is what makes it fun!

Woohoo! Congrats. Ours just arrived the other day….just the 100 though.
Do you resubmit all grapes for the 200 or just the additional grapes you tried? I guess my question is: Do they keep a list of the grapes you already had or do you resupply them?
Thank you! I add all of my new grapes/wines into the same spreadsheet, so when I submit it for the next level, I simply submit the updated file, so yes, I just keep adding. This way it is also easier to manage the whole process for me, and I always have a reference of what I already tried…

Awesome! I’m highly impressed. The Wine Century is one of the coolest clubs I’ve ever heard of. I’m not a clubby person, but I sure am cheering you, and all the gang, on to success! (I’ve always been more of a cheerleader than a player–it’s only a supporting role, but I’m good at it. And studies have proven that good cheerleaders do boost morale and therefore improve a team’s chances of winning).

How long did it take for them to send you the certificate and did they reply to your email? I’ve sent my application to the Wine Century Club over 2 months ago and haven’t gotten a reply yet..
Thank you, Julian! No, they don’t respond to the e-mails. I think it was 3-4 month for me – but as this is not an official business, this is more of Labor of Love, I can’t complain. This was my experience with them throughout the years, and I know that in the end of the day the certificate arrives. You can send them another email, just in case if the first one didn’t make it – but I would think that your certificate should arrive shortly.

Congrats! I’ve thought about making the effort just to get to 100. But like Tracey above, I’m not much of a joiner. And to quote Groucho Marx, “I wouldn’t be a member of any club that would have me as a member.
500? That would be almost inconceivable and must represent a lot of effort just to find the next 100. Go get ‘me and let us hear about these next 100.

You also research lesser known grapes and keep track of them. That’s a lot of work. Nobody is giving me a certificate for 400 cheap grocery store Cabernets. 😉

Do you eliminate duplications due to synonyms? Using Robinson’s “Wine Grapes” as my bible for sorting those out, I’m nearing 400 myself. (It’s amazing how many names a single grape can have, and how much controversy there can be over whether a grape in one place is or isn’t the same grape somewhere else!)
It is a tough question. If the synonym is obvious, such as Grenache/Garnacha/Garnaxta, then yes, it would be one grape. But then, for instance, I would look at Sangiovese and Sangiovese Grosso, or Tempranillo and Ink of Toro (Toro), separate grapes. I have done for the established clones as well, such as Sauvignon Blanc/Soliloque Sauvignon Blanc. Don’t know if this helps, but this is my approach so far.
